Glasses stronger every year?

If every exam ends with a stronger prescription for your child, you did nothing wrong. The eye is still growing longer, and regular glasses clear the blur without slowing that growth.

  • Last year's glasses already seem too weak.
  • Glasses get lost at practice and the beach.
  • Contacts should come out before you surf or swim, per the CDC.

Fair frustrations. You deserve a plain answer.

Overnight ortho-k for kids and adults

How ortho-k works

Ortho-k (orthokeratology) uses custom rigid lenses worn only during sleep to gently reshape the cornea, the clear front of the eye. The aim is clear daytime vision with no glasses or daytime contacts. It is not surgery, and the effect is temporary: it depends on continued nightly wear.

Ortho-k lenses are FDA approved for overnight correction of nearsightedness, up to about -5.00 to -6.00 diopters depending on the design.

Ortho-k for children and myopia

For children whose prescription keeps climbing. Your child gets school, sports and beach days without glasses. In clinical studies, children wearing ortho-k also had, on average, about 40 to 50 percent less eye growth over two years than children in regular glasses. Results vary, and existing nearsightedness is not undone. Slowing eye growth is often an off-label use, depending on the lens design.

Overnight wear of any contact lens carries infection risk. Clean hands, no tap water and regular checkups keep it low.

Ortho-k for adults

For adults with mild to moderate nearsightedness who are not ready for surgery. The lenses are worn only while you sleep, so no contact lens is in your eye when you surf, swim or boat. Infection risk remains, and the lenses must never be rinsed or stored in tap water.

LASIK changes the cornea for good. Ortho-k is a nightly routine you can end. Early halos and glare can occur. We do not perform LASIK.

Three steps to an answer

  1. Book a consultation online or by phone.

  2. Find out if it fits. We discuss whether ortho-k is right for you or your child.

  3. Start nightly wear. The lenses go in at bedtime and come out in the morning.

Success is a morning with nothing in your eyes: lenses out, then school, work or the water. Without a plan, a child's prescription usually keeps climbing.

What the studies found

0.36 mm vs 0.63 mm

In the ROMIO randomized trial of 102 children aged 6 to 10, eyes grew 0.36 mm over two years with ortho-k and 0.63 mm with glasses, on average.

1 in 1,000 to 2,000

Serious infection is uncommon but real, estimated at roughly 1 case per 1,000 to 2,000 wearers per year, with wide uncertainty.

Most trials were run in East Asian children, and results vary.

Why slowing myopia matters

When nearsightedness keeps progressing, it can become high myopia, which raises the lifetime risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma and macular disease. Ortho-k is one of several approaches, and your child's eye exam decides which one fits.

What ortho-k costs

Nationally, ortho-k generally costs about $1,000 to $4,000 to start, with ongoing costs of roughly $300 to $500 a year. These are general US ranges, not our fees.

Most insurance treats ortho-k as elective. HSA and FSA funds can typically be used.

Frequently asked questions

What age can a child start ortho-k?

There is no single right age. Most children start between about 6 and 12, the ages in the main clinical trials.

Is ortho-k safe for kids?

It is considered safe when lenses are properly fitted, cleaned and checked, but not without risk. For a red or painful eye, remove the lens and call us or seek urgent care today.

How long does ortho-k take to work?

Some people see better within days. Full correction can take two weeks or longer.

How much does ortho-k cost?

It depends on the prescription and lens design.

Is ortho-k permanent?

No. The effect is temporary, and the earlier prescription returns if nightly wear ends.
